Folded Normal Distribution

The BIS.Net Team BIS.Net Team

The folded normal distribution is a probability distribution related to the normal distribution. Given a normally distributed random variable X with mean μ and variance σ2, the random variable Y = |X| has a folded normal distribution. Such a case may be encountered if only the magnitude of some variable is recorded, but not its sign.

Folded Normal Distribution

The probability density function for the folded normal distribution is:

Folded Normal formula

The location and scale parameters are mu and sigma, respectively from the original distribution.

Obtaining the parameters using TECHNOLOGY is essentially a maximum likelihood estimation procedure. The BIS.Net Process Performance APP uses a machine powered algorithm which minimizes the Anderson Darling Statistic.

One application for the folded normal distribution is to study the magnitude of deviation of an automobile strut alignment.
